Exploring the Vauxhall Mokka 2023:

A Stylish and Versatile Compact SUV

The second-generation Vauxhall Mokka, launched in 2020, has gained significant popularity as a compact SUV that offers style, versatility, and impressive features. In this blog post, we will delve into the key aspects of the Vauxhall Mokka, including its trim levels, popularity, comparisons, reliability, engine options, running costs, suitability for families, competition, and its value for leasing.

Vauxhall Mokka Exterior

The Vauxhall Mokka is a popular compact SUV that was redesigned for the 2020 model. Its exterior design showcases a modern and dynamic look, featuring several notable elements:

  • Front Fascia: The Mokka has a bold and distinctive front fascia. It sports a prominent Vauxhall logo placed in the centre of a sleek black grille. The grille extends horizontally, connecting with the sharp LED headlights on either side. The headlights have a slim and angular design, giving the vehicle an aggressive appearance.
  • Sculpted Body: The Mokka's body features sculpted lines and curves, contributing to its athletic stance. The smooth and aerodynamic profile is accentuated by carefully placed character lines that add depth and style to the overall design.
  • Roofline and Window Design: The Mokka has a sloping roofline that gives it a sporty and coupe-like silhouette. The side windows feature a blacked-out surround, creating a visually striking contrast against the body colour.
  • Wheel Options: Vauxhall offers a range of alloy wheels for the Mokka, varying sizes and designs based on the trim level. The wheels add a touch of personalisation and enhance the vehicle's overall appearance.
  • Rear Styling: At the back, the Mokka has sleek LED taillights that extend vertically towards the roofline. The rear bumper features a clean and integrated design, with reflectors and a subtle diffuser element on some trim levels.
  • Colour Options: The Mokka is available in a variety of exterior colours, including vibrant shades and classic tones.

Overall, the Vauxhall Mokka exhibits a contemporary and eye-catching exterior design with its distinctive front fascia, sculpted body, and sleek profile, making it a stylish choice in the compact SUV segment.

Vauxhall Mokka comfort, practicality and luggage space

Front passengers in the Mokka will find there's plenty of head and legroom, and the Mokka is wide enough for taller passengers not to feel cramped. The driver’s seat goes back long enough to accommodate long legs easily, and taller drivers can adjust their seat so that it goes forward far enough for them to depress the clutch pedal comfortably.

Rear space is ok, but if you're regularly transporting passengers over six feet in the rear, you may wish to consider the Vauxhall Crossland, which offers a useful sliding rear bench to maximise legroom.

The Mokka offers a decent 350-litres of boot space, although this is outclassed by the Renault Captur, which provides 422-litres of luggage space, and up to 536-litres of space if you utilise the Captur's sliding rear bench.

However, by folding down the Mokka's rear seats, you get up to 1,105-litres of space to use if you need to pack the SUV to the full.

Please note that due to the electric battery and motor, the Mokka Electric provides 310 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, but you can expand this up to 1060-litres by folding the rear seats down.

Vauxhall Mokka Trim Levels: An Option for Every Preference

The Vauxhall Mokka 2023 offers several trim levels, each with its own set of features and enhancements. Here are the trim levels available for the Vauxhall Mokka 2023:

Design

The Design trim is the entry-level option, providing a solid foundation of features. It includes LED headlights, 16" silver alloy wheels, a 7" colour touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, DAB radio, air conditioning, cruise control, and a range of safety features such as lane departure warning, traffic sign and speed sign recognition and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

GS trim

The GS trim builds upon the Design trim and adds sportier elements inside and out, including red detailing throughout the interior and a limited colour pallet to compliment the red accents on the wheels. This trim also adds larger 18" bi-colour alloy wheels with red accents, keyless entry, heated front seats and steering wheel, a 12" digital cluster instrument panel, a larger 10" colour touchscreen with sat-nav and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, electronic climate control, a panoramic rear-view camera with rear parking sensors and adaptive cruise control.

Ultimate trim

The Ultimate trim represents the top-of-the-line option for the Vauxhall Mokka 2023, offering a more luxurious and refined experience. It includes features such as IntelliLux LED® Matrix headlights with LED tail lights, advanced park assist, a panoramic rear-view camera with front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, wireless phone charging, blind spot alert and lane positioning assist.

Mokka Black Edition trim

This trim was introduced as a special edition to the Mokka range earlier in 2023. Based on the GS model, Black cars get exclusive 18-inch gloss black alloys and Vulcan Grey exterior paint. This edition also adds a black roof, badging and black detailing to help it stand out from the crowd.

The Mokka Electric is available in the following two trim levels:

Mokka Electric GS trim

As standard, the entry-level GS trim includes a dual-screen infotainment system with a 10" colour touchscreen incorporating satellite navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration and a 12" driver's display, a panoramic rear-view camera with rear parking sensors, keyless go, 18" bi-colour alloy wheels with red accent, a contrasting black roof, heated front seats, electronic climate control, LED headlights, DAB radio and adaptive cruise control.

Mokka Electric Ultimate trim

You get some useful upgrades with the top-of-the-range Ultimate trim. Thanks to the LEDR Matrix headlights, you’ll benefit from having optimum vision when driving at night, and parking will be much simpler with the advanced park assist pack. The interior also includes higher-quality Alcantara seats which provide more comfort.

Vauxhall Mokka 2023 engines

Petrol engines

Vauxhall, who are part of the Stellantis group, now have a more straightforward engine offering compared to the past when they used to offer numerous engines. Nowadays, the Mokka has a single petrol engine offering, a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, with different power options.

The base level 99bhp version, with a six-speed manual gearbox, gets from 0-62mph in a tidy 10.6 seconds. You can also lease a 134bhp version with a manual transmission that does 0-62mph in a sprightlier 9.1s. There's also a 128bhp engine paired with a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission, which also does 0-62mph in 9.1s.

Diesel engines

The only diesel engine initially offered with the second-generation Mokka was discontinued in 2022.

Electric engine

Like many crossovers, the Vauxhall Mokka is available with an EV powertrain. The Mokka Electric is equipped with a 50kWh battery pack that feds a 136bhp electric motor, delivering power to the front wheels. This is the most powerful version of the Mokka, which accelerates from 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds.

The drive modes in the Mokka Electric have been designed by Vauxhall to limit the power and maximise range. The 'Eco' mode limits power to 82bhp, 'Normal' mode provides up to 109bhp and changing to 'Sport' gives you all of the available 136hp. No matter which mode you have the vehicle in, it still feels pretty nippy driving around town.

The total battery range on the WLTP combined test is 209 miles, although it's possible to get up to 250 miles on a single charge, depending on driving conditions and usage.

All Mokka Electric vehicles come with 100kW fast charging capability as standard, which allows for a 10-80% top-up in approximately 30 minutes when using a public fast charger. However, charging from a 7kW wallbox installed at home probably works out cheaper and takes around 7.5 hours.

Vauxhall Mokka running costs

Despite the Mokka sitting amongst many talented competitors, there’s plenty to recommend about Vauxhall’s stylish and trendy compact SUV. If you opt for any of the three traditional petrol combustion-engined versions, you will benefit from excellent fuel economy. Whether you opt for the entry-level 99bph engine or the 134bhp version with its extra power, you should still get a healthy return of around 51mpg. The eight-speed automatic model will return around a WLTP combined cycle of 47.9mpg. Of course, these figures are all dependent on how the Mokka is driven.

CO2 levels for the petrol models range from 124g/km to 133g/km, and Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax rates for company car drivers will fall between 29 and 31%.

However, if you want to reduce your running costs further, you should give the Mokka Electric some strong consideration. Business users can benefit from an extremely low Benefit-in-Kind rate of only 2% for the 2023/24 financial year. In addition, if you lease the Mokka Electric, you're exempt from paying road tax and the London Congestion Charge until 2025.

How safe is the Vauxhall Mokka 2023?

In 2021, the Vauxhall Mokka was tested by Euro NCAP, which awarded it a four-star rating. Adult and child protection scores were 73% and 75%, respectively.

The second-generation Mokka is equipped with a range of advanced safety features designed to enhance driver and passenger protection. While the specific safety features may vary depending on the trim level and optional packages, here are some of the standard safety features available in the Vauxhall Mokka 2023:

  1. Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB): This system uses sensors to detect potential collisions and automatically applies the brakes to reduce or avoid an impact.
  2. Lane Keep Assist (LKA): LKA helps to prevent unintentional lane departure by providing steering assistance or warnings if the vehicle drifts out of its lane without signalling.
  3. Traffic Sign RecognitionThis feature uses a front-facing camera to detect and display traffic signs, including speed limits and other essential road signs.
  4. Cruise Control: This feature is provided as standard on the petrol and engine models.
  5. Forward Collision Alert (FCA): Operates at speeds over 3mph. If a pedestrian or vehicle ahead is approached too quickly, the system sounds a warning chime and shows a message on the Driver Information Cluster screen. If a forward collision is imminent, the braking system is prepared, and, if required, emergency braking is applied to minimise the effects of a potential crash. With speeds below 18mph the system can bring the vehicle to a complete standstill. Speed is reduced for speeds over 18mph, and the driver must actively apply the brake.
  6. Driver Drowsiness System: This system monitors driver behaviour and alerts the driver if signs of drowsiness or inattention are detected, helping to prevent accidents caused by driver fatigue.
  7. Electronic Stability Programme (ESP): ESP helps maintain vehicle stability by automatically applying brakes to individual wheels and adjusting engine torque when the vehicle is at risk of skidding or losing control.
  8. Multiple Airbags: The Vauxhall Mokka 2023 is equipped with a comprehensive airbag system, including driver and front passenger airbags, front-seat side impact airbags, and full-size curtain airbags, to protect occupants in the event of a collision.

What are the Vauxhall Mokka insurance groups?

The Vauxhall Mokka Electric’s insurance group rating is 22 for both the GS and Ultimate trims.

Is the Vauxhall Mokka worth leasing?

Deciding whether the Vauxhall Mokka is worth leasing depends on your personal circumstances, preferences, and financial considerations. Leasing can offer several benefits, such as lower monthly payments compared to financing a vehicle purchase, the ability to drive a newer car with the latest features, and avoiding the hassle of selling or trading in a car.

Here are some factors to consider when determining if leasing a Vauxhall Mokka is a good choice for you:

  1. Budget: Leasing typically involves lower monthly payments compared to purchasing a vehicle through financing. If you have a limited budget or prefer lower monthly expenses, leasing could be a more affordable option for accessing a Vauxhall Mokka. It's important to evaluate the lease terms, including the duration, mileage limits, and any additional fees or charges associated with the lease.
  2. Affordability: We often have Business Contract Hire deals that start around the £240 + VAT per month mark. The monthly cost will depend on the trim, engine, annual mileage, contract length and the inital rental payment you choose.
  3. Desire for Newer Vehicles: Leasing allows you to drive a new car with the latest features and technology. If you enjoy having the latest models and want to experience the newest advancements in automotive technology, leasing can be an attractive option. With a lease, you can upgrade to a newer car at the end of the lease term, typically every two to four years.
  4. Predictable Maintenance and Repair Costs: Leasing a vehicle often means that the car is under warranty throughout the lease term. This can provide peace of mind as it covers most major repairs and maintenance costs. However, it's essential to familiarise yourself with the terms of the warranty and any limitations or exclusions that may apply.

  2. Safety Features: The Vauxhall Mokka typically comes equipped with a range of advanced safety features and driver-assistance systems. These include features such as automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, a driver drowsiness alert system, a tyre pressure monitoring system and cruise control. These safety features can provide peace of mind for families, especially when transporting children or travelling on motorways.
