The All-New BMW 1 Series Has Been Revealed

The BMW 1 Series, a beloved icon in the hatchback scene, enters its fourth generation with some big design changes.
Celebrating 20 years since the debut of its top-selling model, the mid-life update set for release in October aims to maintain the 1 Series' rising sales trajectory. Last year, sales increased by 64% to 22,855 units in the UK alone.
In the UK, BMW has condensed the 1 Series lineup to just three variants. The 168bhp 120i Sport, 120i M Sport, and the 300bhp M135i xDrive. The latter's four-cylinder turbo petrol engine seeing a reduction of 6bhp from its predecessor. All models now exclusively feature a seven-speed automatic transmission, meaning no more manuals!
The all-new BMW 1 Series showcases a striking exterior with its sporty and dynamic appearance. The distinctive BMW kidney grille and new LED headlights, which are standard across the range, emphasise the car's new, advanced design with the kidney grille featuring an innovative structure of both vertical and diagonal bars.
Optional adaptive LED headlights enhance visibility with a high beam that adjusts to road conditions. This model also introduces a strikingly modern silhouette with a dynamic wedge shape. This latest model also features a slightly larger body, measuring 42mm longer (4,361mm in total) and 25mm taller (at 1,459mm) than before, though the width is “virtually unchanged” at 1,800mm.
Under the hood, the BMW 1 Series makes significant strides in performance and sustainability, introducing highly efficient engines equipped with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. The top-tier BMW M135 xDrive leads the performance lineup with a 221 kW (300 hp) four-cylinder engine, delivering a breathtaking 0 to 100 km/h run in just 4.9 seconds.
Inside, the BMW 1 Series transforms the hatchback with a fully redesigned, leather-free cabin, providing a luxurious and environmentally conscious experience. The new seats offer exceptional comfort, perfect for both track days and long journeys. The cockpit features fewer physical buttons, relying on a sleek 10.25-inch Information Display and a 10.7-inch Control Display for a clean, modern user interface.
The BMW Curved Display and the latest BMW iDrive system ensure that all controls are intuitive and within easy reach, enhancing the driving experience without distracting from the road.
The new 1 Series benefits from an improved chassis that boosts rigidity and refines the connection between the body and suspension, enhancing agility and driving precision. New shock absorber technology and increased front wheel caster ensure superior handling and stability.
BMW shows its stance on safety and driver assistance systems with the new 1 Series. Standard features now include a more comprehensive range of assistance systems, such as the Driving Assistant and the Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant. The optional upgrades offer even more, including Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function.
Set for production at BMW's Group plant in Leipzig, the all-new BMW 1 Series is scheduled for a market launch in October 2024.
