Kia Niro 2023 Review

Introducing the 2023 Kia Niro

Did you know how vital the Niro SUV is to Kia?  The electric and hybrid versions have become the second most popular models Kia sells in the UK, and only the Sportage has sold more.

The latest, second-generation Kia Niro delivers even greater success than the first version introduced in 2016.  The South Korean manufacturer has added extra desirability inside and out by increasing the amount of interior space and providing the latest in-car technology.  The design of the latest Niro variant has taken details from the Sportage and EV6 models.   Kia has also continued the traits that make the first Niro so popular, mainly meagre running costs and the choice of plug-in hybrid, hybrid and hybrid electric power.

In our review below, we are focusing on the two hybrid versions of the 2023 Kia Niro.

Just like before, you can select your preferred choice of hybrid.  The most affordable version, badged as the Niro Hybrid, is the self-charging hybrid made famous by the Toyota Prius.  As well as being cheap to lease, it's much lighter than the plug-in version, doesn't need any effort to charge, and provides consistent fuel economy.

Then also the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) version, which is notably faster and provides a pure electric range of up to 40 miles - providing you keep your journeys within that distance, you will hardly use any fuel.

But the Niro PHEV's main appeal is with company car drivers who can benefit from sizeable benefit-in-kind tax savings

The interior of the latest Niro resembles the electric Kia EV6 – and that’s a good thing.  It's more spacious and comfortable than ever before and can easily seat up to five people, with sizable headroom and legroom for all passengers.  The rear seats accommodate at least two tall adults or large child car seats.

Storage space in the front includes good-sized door pockets and two drink holders in the centre console.  Passengers sitting in the rear get a pair of cupholders on the fold-down centre armrest, a handy area on the door to store a drinks bottle and a map pocket on the back of the front seats.

The inside of the Niro is made of soft and sustainable materials, with the seats made from bioplastics, the roof trim made from recycled wallpaper,  and you'll even find water-based paint on the door panels.  All of the several chrome details deliver an impression of quality.

Kia Niro 2023 trims

The 2023 Kia Niro is also generously supplied with a host of standard driver convenience and safety features, such as an 8.0" touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 4.2" driver's display, 16" alloy wheels, dual LED headlights, cruise control, a reversing camera, pedestrian and cyclist recognition, rear parking sensors and automatic emergency braking.

If you choose the '3' trim, you get to enjoy a larger 10.25" touchscreen infotainment system, keyless entry, privacy glass, 18" alloy wheels, faux leather heated seats with adjustable driver lumbar support and a heated steering wheel - which is very much appreciated in the winter.  In addition, the '3' also provides you with tinted rear windows, blind-spot warning and a handy wireless phone charging pad.

The premium '4’ version has the same features as ‘3’ model but adds dual 10.25-inch screens, heated rear seats, cooled front seats and a head-up display.

The boot space in the 2023 Kia Niro is also impressive, with the Hybrid version offering up to 451 litres of space.  That's more than what you get with the Lexus UX, Toyota C-HR and Honda HR-V.  However, the PHEV's boot is smaller, with 348 litres of space, but it's still more than enough space to store what you need for a family weekend trip away or your weekly shop.

CONCLUSION

The 2023 Kia Niro is a fantastic choice for eco-conscious drivers looking for a stylish, comfortable, and efficient car.  The redesign and upgrades to the technology and safety features make it a compelling option in the hybrid and plug-in hybrid market.  The lease prices are also reasonable and affordable, making it an accessible choice for many drivers.  Overall, the 2023 Kia Niro is a great family car that offers an exceptional driving experience with fuel efficiency, comfort, and practicality.
