BYD, previously known for its all-electric models like the Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal saloon, has now ventured into the hybrid market with the launch of its first plug-in hybrid, the Seal U.

The Seal U, or Seal U DM-i, introduces an advanced plug-in hybrid system called 'Super DM' (Dual Mode), which is an innovative technology that allows the vehicle to operate as a fully electric car when the battery is charged and switch seamlessly to hybrid mode as the battery level drops. This system optimises efficiency and extends the vehicle's range, making it an excellent option for both city driving and longer journeys.

The all-wheel drive ‘Design’ model combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an 18.3 kWh Blade battery and dual electric motors, delivering a total of 324 PS and 550 Nm of torque. This model can sprint from 0-62 mph in just 5.9 seconds, with a top speed limited to 188 mph.

The front-wheel drive ‘Boost’ model gets the same 18.3 kWh Blade battery but less power, at 218 PS. Whilst the front-wheel drive ‘Comfort’ model features a larger 26.6 kWh battery that provides an impressive electric range of up to 78 miles, making it ideal for maximising electric travel.

Charging the Seal U is straightforward and efficient, with an 18 kW DC capability that allows the battery to recharge from 30-80% in just 35 minutes. Additionally, the Seal U supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing it to serve as a mobile power source, which is particularly useful in emergency situations or for outdoor activities.

The design of the Seal U is both stylish and functional. It features a distinctive X-shaped front end with U-shaped headlights that blend seamlessly into the bonnet. Inside, the cabin offers a premium environment with features like heated and ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, and two large digital screens, ensuring both comfort and connectivity.

In terms of luggage space, the boot provides 425 litres of space, which further expands to 1,440 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

In terms of safety features, BYD say ‘The BYD SEAL U DM-i has therefore been developed to be one of the safest electric family SUV’s in its class.’ And equipped with advanced driver assistance systems including adaptive cruise control, forward & rear collision warning, lane change assist, and many more, we can see why.

Stay tuned for more information on the BYD Seal U and lease prices, which will be announced shortly with UK deliveries to begin in the autumn of 2024.
